BASIC WINE
CONSULTING
All wine matters
“Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of intelligent effort” - John Ruskin
Basic Wine strives to help the producer apply the intelligent effort by interpreting unique situations and provide custom options/solutions in order to produce stable and improved quality wines.
I have a certain passion for wine aroma chemistry and how to amplify (or suppress) certain aroma compounds through the use of winemaking techniques. However, all wine matters are of interest and can be effectively and efficiently addressed.
Problem wines
Get to the heart of the problem by doing an in-depth investigation to determine the source of the problem and how to prevent the problem from occurring again.
Project Management
Forward-thinking producers may have specific novel ideas with vineyard and/or winery practices that they would like to test.
Basic Wine can assist with the planning and management of in-house investigative projects and can ultimately process data and interpret results. The outcome of these projects can be published or shared on various platforms which could ultimately enhance the wider wine producing community.
Third-party intervention
In certain situations, it can be increasingly difficult for owners, managers, and employees to develop an accurate perspective regarding in-house production issues.
Basic Wine can serve as a third-party intervention to assess and provide objective feedback to ensure constructive action for the production of quality wines.
Advice can be either once-off, ad hoc or on a contract basis. An hourly rate includes travel, visit and reporting time. A quote can be requested before consultation
SCIENCE COMMUNICATION
Tell us what’s new
During the year, several wine information sessions hosted by associations (such as the cultivar groups, wine clubs, and conferences), aim to educate and inform the producer of the latest trends in the production of quality wines.
Basic Wine can investigate the newest available research on the selected specific topic and digest and transform the information into an easily understandable format, thereby effectively transferring the knowledge so the producer can practically utilize the new information on the production site.
Any trends?
These associations also have copious amounts of information from years of data collection from wine competitions. Processing this data and investigating trends could reveal valuable information and be communicated to members.
Blog posts
Looking to post regular blogs about your wine and/or winery? Basic Wine can assist with these type of posts. Keep the consumer interested in what you are doing and at what stage of processing you currently are by giving snippets of information they can actually understand.
Back to Basics
Often a producer would also like to take a step back and connect with the roots established in their varsity days. A Back to Basics approach can be pursued to recap on topics and fundamental subjects that have become fuzzy over the years.

EDUCATION & TRAINING
Laboratory
Being able to trust your lab analyses is crucial when it comes to making decisions during the winemaking process. Whether you have a small lab in the cellar or looking to analyse aroma in wines using more sophisticated instruments such as a GCMS, Basic Wine can help with training and setting up of methods to enable you to analyse your wines efficiently and accurately.
Anything from basic laboratory etiquette & safety, accurate measuring using pipettes and other basic lab equipment to setting up a protocol for analyses and interpreting results.
Sensory
A huge passion of mine! Basic Wine offers training of cellar and tasting room staff or just anybody that would like to learn more about wine! The level of training can absolutely be adjusted depending on the specific need and the intended application of the skills.
Getting back to the basics is always a good idea. Developing your fundamental recognition skills using simple and clear examples and thereafter progressing to the complex matrix that is wine. Refresh your senses and your memory to help you identify the vast number of aromas present in wines.
Train your staff to recognise faulty wines instantly. Various faults are covered and as well as how to differentiate between a faulty wine and a wine produced using alternative winemaking techniques.
Winemaking
Getting to know the fundamentals of winemaking, the basic processes involved from the berry to the bottle. This type of training is ideal for new staff such as tasting room staff and cellar staff or even just for the curious consumer wanting the just of winemaking.
